This art quilt features a gingko leaf design couched over an intricately woven ikat textile piece from a Laotian ceremonial shawl which is cut into a kimono shape. 

This elaborate quilt sings with the voices of fabrics from a multitude of global sources.  Kimono silks, hand dyes, batiks and cottons are pieced and some are also appliqued to the surface. Yarn is couched with metallic thread to add texture and sparkle to the surface.  Yarn is also couched in a bold chartreuse color to echo a gingko batik detail in the work. This is feast for the eyes of those who love Asian fabrics!

The colors include the magenta, black, orange and gold of the shawl as well as darker reds, purples and black of the surrounding fabrics.  The occasional pop of chartreuse is a surprise but is scattered in a way that draws the eye around the work.  Organza and silk orbs are also scattered across the piece.  The quilting in this work is not restricted to sections but travels in long curving lines across the work.

This quilt won first place in the fiber category at the Boston Mills Artfest, June 30 – July 2, 2017.
